My Administration Glossary

Hi, my name is Jérémie Messier, and I am in administration at Montmorency College for three years now. My glossary will help people like me that are in administration and need help to learn the vocabulary of this field of study. I went on Google and I searched what were the most commons word in this program to find twenty words that you might need help with or that are going to help anybody in his future career.

administration
noun
The process or activity of running a business, organization, etc.
Example: My friend was working in the administration of a hospital.

balance sheet
noun
A statement of the assets, liabilities, and capital of a business or other organization at a particular point in time, detailing the balance of income and expenditure over the preceding period.
Example: He couldn't explain the irregularities in the balance sheet, and I suspect him of taking the money.

bankruptcy
noun
Bankruptcy is a legal process through which people or other entities who cannot repay debts to creditors may seek relief from some or all of their debts.
Example: I am desperately trying to avoid bankruptcy by only buying necessities.

business
noun
The term business refers to an organization or enterprising entity engaged in commercial, industrial, or professional activities.
Example: These aspects are all of equal importance to me and used together they allow me to manage my business effectively.

credit
noun
The ability of a customer to obtain goods or services before payment, based on the trust that payment will be made in the future.
Example: My wife can't get credit from the bank because she is self-employed and, as such, is considered too much of a risk.

A creditor is an entity that extends credit, giving another entity permission to borrow money to be repaid in the future.
Example: Their backs are to the wall. If they don't find another creditor, they will go bankrupt.

A person can borrow money from a creditor but he have to pay back in the future.
debt
noun
Debt is something, usually money, owed by one party to another.
Example: He's been working three jobs in an attempt to get out of debt.

Debt can be a huge burden.
deposit
noun
A sum payable as the first installment on the purchase of something or as a pledge for a contract, the balance being payable later.
Example: A $50 deposit is required at the time of purchase.

A person is doing a deposit.

noun
Finance represents money management and the process of acquiring needed funds.
Example: She is an expert in finance.

Finance is working with money.
funding
noun
Money provided, especially by an organization or government, for a particular purpose.
Example: Under the terms of the agreement, their funding of the project will continue until 2005.

A funding can help a businessman to start his business.
inflation
noun
Inflation occurs when prices rise, decreasing the purchasing power of your dollars.
Example: The government has been unable to control inflation.

The cost of everything is increasing.
investment
noun
He action or process of investing money for profit or material result.
Example: In making the investment, he hazarded all of his savings.

Making an investment is placing money so you can make profit with it in the future.
margin
An amount by which a thing is won or falls short.
Example: The group had a net profit margin of 30% last year.

A margin can help to know the profit.
retirement

The action or fact of leaving one's job and ceasing to work.
Example: The staff all wished her a long and happy retirement.

When you quit your work and live your life.
risk
noun
A situation involving exposure to danger.
Example: I take a risk every time I go out.

A risk can be high, medium or low and can provide good or bad things.
saving
noun
The money one has saved, especially through a bank or investment plan.
Example: I've been saving my money to buy a house.

Savings can help to pay the bills in the future.
share
noun
One of the equal parts into which a company's capital is divided, entitling the holder to a proportion of the profits.
Example: They bought 33 shares of American Standard.

You can buy a market share of a business.
shareholder
noun
An owner of shares in a company.
Example: We bought back all the shares from a majority shareholder at his asking price.
fr: actionnaire
Shareholders each have a share in a compagny.
stock market
noun
The stock market consists of exchanges in which shares and other financial securities of publicly held companies are issued and traded.
Example: He plans to invest in the stock market.
fr: bourse
Stock market is a huge diagram with the cost of a share for a company.
tax
noun
A compulsory contribution to state revenue, levied by the government on workers' income and business profits, or added to the cost of some goods, services, and transactions.
Example: He was accused of evading taxes.
fr: impôt
Taxes increase the cost of a lot of things.
wallet
noun
A pocket-sized, flat, folding holder for money and plastic cards.
Example: The lady put her money in her wallet.
fr: portefeuille
You can put money, cards and personal stuff in your wallet.
